Over het museum
The Queen's House in Greenwich was designed by Inigo Jones and begun in 1616 for Anne of Denmark, the wife of James I. It was finished in the 1630s for Queen Henrietta Maria and is celebrated as an early classical building in England, with a plain white interior and a cube-shaped Great Hall that influenced later British architecture.
Over the centuries the house changed use. In the nineteenth century it became part of a school for the children of seamen, and when the National Maritime Museum was created in the 1930s the house was incorporated into it. Today the building belongs to Royal Museums Greenwich and forms part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site beside Greenwich Park.
Visitors can enter free and see art from the national maritime collection, including royal portraits, seascapes and contemporary works. The best-known painting is the Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I. The spiral Tulip Stairs are one of the original features of the house, and the displays are rehung each year with new acquisitions and commissions.

All floors have lift access, but the house is split into two halves with no level route between the Great Hall and the Orangery: there are three steps each way, and staff set up portable ramps on request. A lift outside, about 50 metres from the entrance, helps visitors who cannot manage the steep incline. Accessible toilets are in the Undercroft; the nearest Changing Places toilet is in the National Maritime Museum, about 100 metres from the back of the house. Wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge if booked in advance. A hearing loop is at the information desk, and the free Smartify audio guide includes BSL interpretation. Pre-booked audio-described tours, ear defenders, a sensory map and a quiet space are offered. Five accessible bays can be pre-booked in the National Maritime Museum car park.
