Over het museum
Tate Britain opened in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art, thanks to the sugar merchant Henry Tate, who paid for the building and gave his collection of British paintings to the nation. It stands on Millbank beside the Thames, and was for decades known simply as the Tate Gallery.
The collection grew with gifts and purchases and, above all, with the Turner Bequest, which brought most of the paintings and drawings that J. M. W. Turner left to the nation. Today the gallery holds the world's largest collection of Turner's work. In 2000 the building was renamed Tate Britain when the Tate's modern international art moved to Tate Modern, and it concentrated on British art from the Tudors to the present.
The free collection displays now trace British art from the sixteenth century to the Second World War and from 1940 to today, from Pre-Raphaelite painting to David Hockney, Bridget Riley and Lubaina Himid. Temporary exhibitions and commissions, some of them ticketed, are shown alongside. The Millbank entrance is closed until 2027 for the construction of the Clore Garden, so visitors use the Manton Entrance on Atterbury Street.
