Om museet
The collection dates back to 1864, when the Haarlem botanist Frederik Willem van Eeden began collecting raw materials and products from the Dutch colonies on behalf of a society for trade and industry. This gave rise in 1871 to the Koloniaal Museum in Haarlem, which was primarily a museum of commodities.
From 1910, an association in Amsterdam planned a Koloniaal Instituut (Colonial Institute). After more than 16 years of construction, the museum opened by the Oosterpark in 1926 as part of the institute, at the time the largest building in the city. The ethnographic collection of the Artis zoo was added to the Haarlem collection. The institute was meant to spread knowledge about the colonies while also serving colonial propaganda and economic interests.
During World War II, the German Ordnungspolizei (Order Police) used the building. After Indonesia's independence, the Indisch Instituut became the Tropenmuseum of the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen (Royal Tropical Institute). In the 1970s the museum turned its attention to the countries of the Global South, was remodeled and, in 1975, opened Tropenmuseum Junior, one of the first children's museums.
Since 2014 the museum has formed the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen (National Museum of World Cultures) together with the museums in Leiden and Berg en Dal; the collection belongs to the state. It has been called Wereldmuseum Amsterdam since 2023. Its focus today is on global art, design and intangible culture, as well as a critical examination of colonialism, slavery and the return of collection objects.
