Om museet
The Royal Pavilion began in 1787 as a modest seaside villa for George, Prince of Wales, who later became the Prince Regent and then King George IV. Brighton had become fashionable as a seaside resort, and the prince first visited in 1783. He commissioned the architect Henry Holland to enlarge an existing farmhouse into the Marine Pavilion, and further extensions and an Indian-style stables and riding school followed in the early nineteenth century.
Between 1815 and 1822 the architect John Nash remodelled and greatly extended the building, and it is his work that visitors see today. The exterior borrows from Indian architecture, with onion domes and minarets, while the interiors are richly decorated in a Chinese-inspired style. George IV's successors William IV and Queen Victoria also used the Pavilion, but Victoria decided that Osborne House should be her seaside retreat instead. The Pavilion was sold to the town of Brighton in 1850.
During the First World War the Pavilion served as a hospital for wounded soldiers. The building and its restored garden are now looked after by the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust, and a tour through the ground-floor rooms and the first-floor apartments leads visitors through the royal interiors.
