About the museum
The Sumerauerhof in Samesleiten near St. Florian is first mentioned in documents around 1200 and belonged for centuries to the Augustinian canons’ monastery of St. Florian. As a tithe farm and later a “Fraghof”, it was a place of tax administration and jurisdiction for the monastery. The present closed four-sided farmstead emerged from several individual buildings in the 17th century.
After the end of the manorial system in 1848, the farm remained in farming hands. Two fires in the 1850s meant that it was largely rebuilt in 1859 and acquired its present appearance. The Althuber family farmed it over several generations; the last owner, Maria Althuber, ran it from 1926 until her death in 1971. In 1978 the province of Upper Austria acquired the farm.
Today the OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH operates the renovated farm. Exhibition rooms for Upper Austrian folk culture were created on the upper floor, and the former overseer’s flat was converted into a nature discovery room for children and families. There are also orchards with old native varieties, a farm garden, a natural playground, animals of endangered livestock breeds and a beer garden.
