About the museum

The Kulturhaus Ganghofermuseum is housed in the old village school of Leutasch-Kirchplatzl, a building from the mid-20th century. The Ganghofer and local history museum opened here in 1999; the former classrooms are now exhibition rooms.

Part of the exhibition is devoted to the writer Ludwig Ganghofer (1855–1920), who lived for almost twenty years mostly in his hunting lodge "Hubertus" in the Gaistal valley and wrote a large part of his works there, including "Das Schweigen im Walde". Around 1900 his lodge was a meeting place for artists and musicians from the Munich and Vienna circles; photographs and other exhibits commemorate this.

The remaining rooms tell the story of Leutasch village since its first mention in 1166, the life of the woodcutters in the "Holzkammer" valley, farm work and the long-standing hunting tradition. Every exhibit comes from Leutasch.

The building is also a cultural meeting place with a public library, events, a carving room and a museum garden with old grain and herb varieties.
