About the museum
Despite its name, the Gozzoburg is not a castle in the classical sense but the magnificent residence and administrative building of a medieval citizen of Krems. Its core is a late Romanesque, L-shaped building from the time after 1235. Gozzo, who around 1247 married into a Stein burgher family and became wealthy as a town judge, toll administrator and manager of the sovereign's estates, acquired the house and had it extended into a town palace on the Italian model; in 1267 the new St. Catherine's Chapel was consecrated.
In the 14th century the complex fell to the Habsburgs and served as a sovereign's castle. Later it was converted into residential houses for townspeople, at times housed a brewery, and in the 19th century the chapel disappeared behind false ceilings. After comprehensive renovation, the building has been accessible through guided tours since 2007; in 2009 the restoration received the Europa Nostra Award.
On the tours, three rooms can be seen: the Coat of Arms Hall with one of the oldest surviving timber-beam ceilings in Austria from around 1255 and a frieze of real and invented coats of arms; the tower room with early Gothic wall paintings from the second half of the 13th century; and the St. John's and St. Catherine's Chapel, restored since 2018. Today the IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems and the provincial conservation office of the Federal Monuments Authority also use the building; the tours are organised by museumkrems.
