About the museum

The art collector Heidi Goëss-Horten (1941–2022) built up a private collection of international 20th- and 21st-century art over decades, above all after the death of her first husband, Helmut Horten, in 1987. To make the works permanently accessible to the public, she had a museum set up in the Hanuschhof in Vienna's city center, which opened in 2022.

The museum is located in a neoclassical palace building in the inner courtyard of the Hanuschhof, which the Viennese architecture firm the next ENTERprise converted into an exhibition house with an atrium. It also includes a sculpture garden, studio and lecture rooms, and a tea room designed by Markus Schinwald and Hans Kupelwieser. The founding director was Agnes Husslein-Arco; since November 2025 the museum has been headed by Verena Kaspar-Eisert.

The collection comprises several hundred paintings, sculptures and works on paper from the late 19th century to the present. Its focal points are Viennese Modernism, German Expressionism, postwar art, Arte Povera and Pop Art; artists represented include Klimt, Schiele, Picasso, Klee, Magritte, Bacon, Warhol, Richter and Polke. Since September 2024 the permanent exhibition "Klimt ⇄ Warhol" on the ground floor has shown around 50 key works, selected on the basis of a public vote. Temporary exhibitions run on the upper floors.
