About the museum

The Hypolzmühle stands in the Hypolz district of Groß Gerungs in the Waldviertel and looks back on more than 600 years of history. It is first mentioned in 1382, when its owners donated payments in kind to the parish of Gerungs; the village of Hypolz itself is already recorded in 1374. The complex originally comprised a mill, a sawmill and a fulling mill, driven by several overshot water wheels.

The house preserves many traces of this long history, including loophole-like windows, a beam bearing the year 1656, Baroque door fittings and a bread oven. In the 19th century the building was remodelled under the Bachner family, its owners. In 1941 a Francis turbine replaced a water wheel; it still generates electricity for the mill's operation today.

The mill is privately owned by a family who show it to visitors on guided tours with different focuses: the history of the Waldviertel, residents and life stories, how the milling equipment works, 600 years of building history, and hydropower with weir, water wheel and turbine.
