About the museum

The Stiftsmuseum was launched in 1981 at the initiative of the historian Franz Nikolasch and has since been run by the Verein Stiftsmuseum Millstatt. It is located in the rooms of the former abbey on Lake Millstatt, which for centuries was a spiritual and cultural centre of Upper Carinthia and is among the important Romanesque buildings of the country.

The exhibition follows the history of the place in chronological order: from finds of the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages and the Roman and early Christian eras, through the Benedictine monastery (from 1070) and the period of the Order of the Knights of St George (from 1469), to the rule of the Jesuits (1598 to 1773). Separate rooms are devoted to Saint Domitian of Millstatt, a wedding chest from the circle of Andrea Mantegna, a dungeon with scratched inscriptions by prisoners, and a mineral collection on mining in Upper Carinthia.

The association also organises an annual scholarly symposium on the history of Millstatt and Carinthia. The church and Romanesque cloister are freely accessible and are not part of the museum tour.
