About the museum

The roots of the musa go back to 1991, when the City of Vienna showed an exhibition in the City Hall that for the first time presented to the public, in one place, its collection of contemporary art, which had grown over decades. From this makeshift arrangement a museum of its own developed, which opened in June 2007 after construction began in 2005.

The musa is housed in an official building on Rathausstraße that was erected in 1916 as one of Vienna's early reinforced-concrete buildings. It first housed municipal offices, later self-service restaurants moved in, before the building was converted into an exhibition venue.

The presentations are based on the municipal collection of contemporary art, which has been growing since 1951 through purchases of works by Viennese artists. According to the museum, it now comprises more than 50,000 objects by around 5,000 artists. The changing shows trace the development of art over recent decades and introduce lesser-known positions. The building also houses the Startgalerie, which gives young artists a stage, and the Artothek, in existence since 1979, where artworks can be borrowed for the home. Since 2018 the musa has been organisationally part of the Wien Museum.
