About the museum
The Belgian Radiology Museum was founded in November 1990 in the corridors of the radiology department of the Queen Astrid military hospital in Neder-over-Heembeek. The initiative arose on the occasion of the centenary of the discovery of X-rays, with the aim of permanently showing the development of medical imaging.
Its mission is to collect, identify, restore and preserve the heritage of radiology: equipment, works, practices and people that bear witness to the scientific, technical and cultural progress of this discipline. It traces the history of civilian and military radiology in Belgium. The route includes reconstructions of former radiology practices, display cases of objects, posters on the evolution of techniques, a specialised library and exhibitions. Visitors move freely from the first work on X-rays to the most recent developments.
The museum is supported and run by the Asklepios association, founded in July 1992, which funds its activities, provides volunteers and organises symposiums and excursions. It has received several awards since 1995. On request, some objects are lent for exhibitions or used as film sets.
