About the museum
BIBLIA is a Bible experience centre in the historic buildings of the Grootseminarie in Bruges, a former Cistercian abbey. For more than fourteen years, a permanent exhibition on the Bible, the Bijbelhuis, stood in the abbey grounds of Zevenkerken and welcomed thousands of children, pupils, students and adults. After so many years of intensive use, the exhibition was due for renewal.
A new experience centre was therefore built and moved from Zevenkerken to the Grootseminarie. This solved the biggest drawback of the old location: accessibility. The new site is easy to reach on foot, by bike or by public transport, and the museum space, at 435 m², is about four times as large. The museum design agency Bailleul, later called Wondering, helped with the layout, together with Studio Klaas Verplancke for the concept.
Visitors travel through the world of the Bible with an audio guide, with many places where they are challenged to think and act for themselves. The centre is aimed at all ages, with or without prior knowledge, and has tailored routes for young people and schools. The game Break the Code is built around the search for the lost sons of Abraham.
