About the museum
De School van Toen is a school museum in the Klein Raamhof in Ghent's Patershol district. The museum is housed in a typical school building from 1901 and shows how education and upbringing were experienced more than a century ago.
The collection consists of old publications, exercise books, wall charts, photos, school furniture and other educational material. During the guided tours topics include family size, hygiene, housing and work, order and discipline, prize-giving, education by social class (standenonderwijs), needlework, wall charts, and learning to read, write and count. Part of the school material can also be viewed online on Erfgoedinzicht.
The museum is free for individual visitors and works with volunteers who guide schools and groups. You can visit it by appointment from Monday to Friday; on shopping Sundays it is open without an appointment.
