About the museum

Fort de Battice is one of the large works of the Liège fortified position. Construction began in 1934 and was completed in 1937. Together with the forts of Aubin-Neufchâteau and Tancrémont, it forms sector PFL 1 of the Liège fortified position.

On 10 May 1940 it was one of the first works attacked by the German army. Its garrison of about 750 men endured artillery fire and aerial bombardment for more than a week. On 21 May a bomb penetrated Block 1 and caused numerous casualties; the block was cut off from the rest of the fort. After a short truce, the command found that the work could no longer be defended, and the fort surrendered on the morning of 22 May.

During the occupation, the Germans used the fort to test demolition techniques and weapons, including the Röchling shell. After the war, scrap dealers dismantled much of the equipment. Today, volunteers organise guided tours that show part of the underground installations and the blocks on the surface.
