About the museum

The Hopmuseum is housed in the complex of the Stadsschaal, the old weigh house of Poperinge where hops used to be weighed, graded and stacked. The museum opened in 1979 and was thoroughly renovated in 2005. It shows the history of hops in Poperinge, from the thirteenth century to the present day, spread over four floors.

On level 3 you learn where hops come from, how they came to Poperinge and which varieties there are. Level 2 is about cultivation, and level 1 about the harvest, which was done by hand until the 1950s and by machine after that. On level 0 you follow the processing and see what hops are used for.

An important part is the Belgian Beer Collection, with more than 2,500 different Belgian beers, which you can explore with a digital beer table. The museum also organises guided tours with a regional beer or a tasting, the free Museum Sunday and brewing workshops.
