About the museum
The Maison de l’Histoire et du Patrimoine occupies the former communal school of Glabais, a village in the municipality of Genappe. The building was constructed in 1867 in brick and bluestone, in the typical style of schools of the second half of the nineteenth century. The school closed in 1975. After restoration, the venue was inaugurated on 9 September 2006, during the Heritage Days devoted to repurposed public buildings.
The building is managed by the Cercle d’histoire et d’archéologie du Pays de Genappe, which keeps objects bearing witness to the past there and carries out its research and publications from the site. It houses an archaeology room with archaeological and cartographic collections, a genealogy room (more than 7,000 family files for all the municipalities of Walloon Brabant) and a large library of general, regional and local history.
A museum space presents objects linked to old trades and everyday life in Genappe and its villages. For about six months, panels and objects from off-site exhibitions are also displayed there (the wars of 1914 and 1940, posters, trades, Quatre-Bras, Hattain). The collections come largely from donations.
