About the museum
Maison Leffe invites visitors to discover the history of Leffe abbey beer in the corridors of a former monastery in Dinant, now the hotel “La Merveilleuse”. The visit combines interactive experiences, touch screens and a beer tasting; it also offers a view over the Meuse valley and explains the character and roots of this abbey beer.
The story goes back to the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Leffe, near Dinant, where Premonstratensian canons settled in 1152. In 1240 they bought several properties, including a brewery, and brewed beer within the abbey grounds. The brewery was destroyed at the end of the 18th century, during the French Revolution, and the community was dissolved. In 1952 a brewer was given permission to produce Leffe beer again; today it belongs to AB InBev and is brewed in Leuven.
