About the museum
Mout- & Brouwhuis De Snoek is a village brewery with a malt house from the nineteenth century in Fortem, a sub-municipality of Alveringem. The complex has been preserved as the only still intact brewery and malt house from that period in the region. During the First World War, front-line soldiers drank a locally brewed beer here before returning to the trenches.
In 1989 the vzw Westhoek-Monumenten started a heritage project to preserve the brewery and restore it as a brewery museum. Since 1996 the Mout- & Brouwhuis has published a study every year in the series “Het Vlaams brouwbedrijf in historisch perspectief” (The Flemish brewing industry in historical perspective), documenting the brewing history of Flanders. In the museum you get to know the brewers, their assistants and the copper brew kettles, and you walk through the section with West Flemish beers. The visit ends in the museum inn.
