About the museum
The museum was founded in March 2012 by Dr Guy Martens, son and grandson of doctors, who also studied art history and antiquities. At the age of 17 he began his collection with small Japanese ivories, the netsuke, and then gathered objects of all kinds and all periods, from Antiquity to the present day.
After acquiring more than 800 works of art, he decided to present this private collection to the public. The museum is housed in an 18th-century house on rue Sainte-Anne, in the Sablon. It offers a historical overview of erotic art through paintings, sculptures, Greco-Roman antiquities, ivories, Japanese prints and other curiosities.
The museum's aim is to show that eroticism has existed since humans discovered pleasure, and to link mythology and eroticism: the word comes from the ancient Greek “eros”, desire or love, embodied by the god Eros. Among the highlighted acquisitions is “Cynthia” by Tom Wesselmann.
