About the museum

The museum was founded in 1970 on the initiative of the Wépion tourist office and Dorothée Houart, a pupil of the folklorist Albert Marinus. The original aim was to preserve local memory by gathering objects and archives from Wépion’s residents. The floods of 1994 and 1995 damaged part of the collections; with support from the City of Namur, the building was then restored and secured.

From 2005, a new board refocused the project on the memory of strawberry growing and on the history of the Meuse valley. In 2011, the City of Namur entrusted the running of the Jardin des petits fruits (soft fruit garden) to the museum. Since 2012, the museum has been professionalising, with the aim of being recognised as a scientific institution by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.

The permanent display was redesigned in 2015, and a new trail entirely devoted to the strawberry was installed in 2017. It is organised around four themes: history, gastronomy, art and literature, and agriculture. Since 2019, a room with interactive digital tablets has complemented the visit, and the museum aims to become the memory centre of strawberry culture in Wallonia.
