Musée Mémorial Charleroi – Le Prix de la Liberté

Military museum in the entrance archway of the Trésignies barracks in Charleroi: Chasseurs à pied, gendarmerie, the Australian presence and the Resistance.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The museum was founded on 14 September 1973 as the Musée des Chasseurs à Pied “Le prix de la Liberté”, thanks to a room in the Trésignies barracks made available by two officers. Originally regimental, it shows how the Chasseurs à pied helped to win back or preserve freedom.

The collections have grown over time: a major collection devoted to the gendarmerie in 2014, a room on the Australian presence in the Charleroi region in 2019, and an area dedicated to the Resistance in 2024. The museum is now called Musée Mémorial Charleroi “Le Prix de la Liberté”, to emphasise its mission of remembrance.

It is housed in the entrance archway of the Trésignies barracks, built between 1876 and 1881 on former fortification land of Vauban. This large U-shaped complex in neo-medieval style has crenellated walls, arrow slits and corner towers; the entrance archway and the two neighbouring square towers have been listed since 1979.
