About the museum
The Musée des Commandos was founded in 1980 on the initiative of Lieutenant-General Pierre Roman, chief of staff of the Land Component and a Commando of the very first hour in 1942. It is housed in the Sous-Lieutenant Thibaut barracks in Flawinne, near Namur, where the 2nd Commando Battalion is stationed.
The museum traces the history of the Belgian Commandos from 1942, the year their first unit was created in Great Britain, the “4th Troop of No 10 Inter-Allied Commando”, to the present day. All units of the Belgian army that have worn the green beret are represented.
Modest at first, it now occupies some twenty rooms and is enriched by donations from former Commandos. The collections, presented in chronological order or by theme, include documents, materiel, equipment, weapons, vehicles and souvenirs. A non-profit association (ASBL) manages the museum and passes on the traditions of the Belgian Commandos.
