About the museum
The Musée Ianchelevici, also called MiLL, is housed in La Louvière in the former law courts, a neoclassical building constructed in 1900. The courts sat there from 1901 to 1977. Mayor Léon Hurez then decided to convert the building into a museum, which required reinforcing the basement, as some sculptures weigh nearly a tonne.
The idea for the museum came from the Romanian-born sculptor Idel Ianchelevici (1909-1994). From 1983 he considered bequeathing his work so that it would remain together in Belgium, and in 1984 he founded, together with his wife, the Ianchelevici Foundation, based in La Louvière. The City had already acquired his sculpture “L’Appel” in 1939. Works began in April 1986, and the museum opened its doors on 15 May 1987.
The museum permanently presents the most important collection of works by Ianchelevici, with sculptures in plaster, bronze and stone, as well as drawings. The upper floor hosts temporary contemporary art exhibitions, and the institution also manages the art collection of the City of La Louvière. It is financed by the City and supported by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
The museum is currently closed for energy renovation works, but it continues its activities outside its walls.
