About the museum
Fort Liezele is the best-preserved armoured fort of the Antwerp Fortress (Vesting Antwerpen). It lies in Liezele, a district of Puurs-Sint-Amands, in the middle of Park Fort Liezele. The fort formed part of the defensive belt around Antwerp on the eve of the First World War.
In the museum you can see how the fortress came about and what role it played during the First World War, with the siege, the experiences of the garrison and the consequences for the population. Personal testimonies show how residents experienced the arrival of the fort. At the start of the war, the village centre of Liezele was completely burnt to the ground: not a single house remained standing.
During a visit you walk through the atmospheric corridors and rooms of the fort, with digital screens, models, game consoles and virtual reality. You discover the life of the soldiers, their sleeping quarters and soldiers’ kitchen, and in the large gun turret you can operate cannons in VR. The collection counts hundreds of artefacts, such as uniforms, equipment, weapons, everyday objects and personal letters from the front; with a guide you also gain access to the “wonder rooms” (wonderkamers), which hold pieces that did not find a place in the permanent collection.
