About the museum
The Muséum régional des Sciences naturelles de Mons is one of the oldest museums in the city: its creation was approved by the municipal council in September 1839. It is now run by the Service public de Wallonie, within its administration for agriculture, natural resources and the environment.
The collections, mainly zoological, comprise more than 10,000 items: birds, mammals and invertebrates, including the rich Yernaux collection, which entered the museum in 2001, and rarities such as an albino macaque from the Philippines or a sturgeon over two metres long caught in the Haine. The skeleton of the giant Constantin is the most famous piece.
The museum offers schools themed guided visits to raise young people’s awareness of biodiversity and nature protection. It is currently closed to the public for renovation works; no reopening date has been announced.
