About the museum
The John Selbach Museum is housed in the former Ursuline convent on Boomgaardstraat in Maaseik. The building was converted into a museum and has four floors, on which the visitor makes a cultural journey through time. The collection comes from the collector John Selbach; the paintings are housed in the John Selbach Foundation, a foundation in the public interest.
On the ground floor you find the former refectory and the period rooms, the former offices of the Ursulines, which John Selbach fully furnished. Ten rooms in Renaissance, Rococo and Biedermeier styles combine furniture, sculpture and decorative arts. On the first and second floors hang about 700 paintings from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century: on the first floor mainly older art from the seventeenth century, on the second floor mainly nineteenth-century Romanticism.
The third floor is the doll and toy museum run by hostess Corinne, which was located in Maastricht for ten years before. Its core consists of about 400 antique dolls and accessories from the nineteenth century; you also see small furniture, tea sets, tin toys, teddy bears and model trains. Individual visitors can only visit the museum on certain days; groups come by appointment.
