About the museum
The Stedelijk Museum of Aarschot has existed since 7 May 1939. Various people from Aarschot helped build up the museum, which has since amassed a rich collection. It is housed on the Gasthuissite, which was transformed into a cultural site in 2005: the Tourism department and the municipal museum found a home in the former maternity clinic, and the cultural centre Het Gasthuis is located in the former convent buildings and the Burgerlijk Gasthuis.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of Groot-Aarschot, from prehistory to recent history. Through image and sound it covers themes that shaped the town, such as religion, war, crafts and industry. You get to know prominent people from Aarschot and moving episodes, such as that of the Aarschot martyrs during the First World War.
The top floor was renovated and opened in 2021 as a white cube, specially for showing art. Changing exhibitions by local and international artists are on view there. The permanent exhibition downstairs is closed for works, probably until the end of 2028.
