About the museum

The cathedral of Notre-Dame in Tournai, the mother church of the diocese, dominates the city with its five towers. It is the only religious building in Belgium built from the outset as a cathedral; it is part of Wallonia's major heritage and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. In 2021 it celebrated the 850th anniversary of its dedication.

Next to the Gothic choir, the cathedral museum, also called the Treasury room (salle du Trésor), brings together pieces of twelfth-century Mosan goldsmith's work, including two major works: the large reliquaries of Notre-Dame and of Saint Eleutherius. Visitors can also admire precious ivories, liturgical objects, a fifteenth-century tapestry, the chasuble of Thomas Becket and the cloak worn by Charles V in 1531.

Entry to the cathedral is free; only the Treasury is paid. In principle it is not accessible during services held in the nave, and it is closed on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, as well as during the Grande Procession in September. According to the Tournai Tourist Office, the Treasury is currently temporarily closed.
