About the museum
The Zuivelmuseum is a permanent exhibition of dairy equipment from the Low Countries. Visitors walk through the history of the dairy industry in Flanders and the Netherlands over the past five centuries and discover the story of milk, from the past to the present.
The collection consists of old butter churns, butter workers, cheese presses, cream skimmers, milk bottles and laboratory equipment, supplemented by historical prints, posters and photographs. It shows how milk is obtained, how butter and cheese are made, and how the milkman sold his goods at the market and door to door. Demonstrations also explain the nutritional value of milk and its derived products.
With support from the province of West Flanders, a museum guide with plenty of historical images was published. It is available in the museum and can be used as a teaching pack. The museum takes part in Erfgoeddag (Heritage Day) and received a special mention for this in 2010.
