About the museum

Textile production and processing have a long tradition in Česká Lípa: a weavers’ guild is documented here as early as 1382. The textile industry reached its greatest growth at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, when manufactories printing on fabric, known as kartounky, were founded, such as the Richter and Wedrich works. By 1837, sixty such works had been established in the Austrian Empire, a third of them in the Česká Lípa area, and Česká Lípa became the second-largest centre of textile printing after Prague. In the second half of the 19th century, interest in Česká Lípa fabrics declined, and the last calico printing works, Rosenthal’s, closed in 1938.

The Textile Printing Centre is housed in a former farm building next to the water castle Lipý and commemorates this heritage. The historical section presents calico printing in the Česká Lípa area and restored printers’ pattern books, while the interactive section shows contemporary printing techniques in a playful way; visitors can try screen printing on canvas or historical printing methods themselves. For the youngest visitors there is simple stamp printing. The exhibition includes a video projection with digitised pattern books and 3D visualisations of how the water castle Lipý looked historically.

The space is also used for workshops, cultural events, lectures and exhibitions. The centre is run by the contributory organisation Kultura Česká Lípa, whose founder is the town of Česká Lípa.
