About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Minorite monastery, which stands next to the church of St Mary Magdalene. The monastery was founded in 1253, in the same year Stříbro became a royal town, and was linked with the lords of Švamberk. Joseph II dissolved it in 1785, and three years later the town bought the buildings. Fires in 1792 damaged the monastery church, and parts of it were demolished in 1871–1872.
The museum moved into these premises in 1988. From 2000 the building was gradually reconstructed, and the present arrangement of the exhibitions has been in place since 2011.
The collections include archaeology, the history of the town up to the 19th century, mineralogy, mining, ethnography, art and natural history specimens. A smaller exhibition, created by the museum in cooperation with the Stříbro Automotoclub, commemorates local motocross. The museum also manages the observation tower of the deanery church of All Saints; the mining open-air museum and the hereditary adit Prokop are opened by the mining association on prior booking.
