About the museum
The beginnings of the Most museum date back to 1888, when the town made a room available for the first collections and entrusted their care to a municipal official. Six years later the Friends of the Museum association was founded, which coordinated the institution’s work and obtained premises for exhibitions in the former Piarist grammar school. During the 20th century the museum was renamed several times and merged with other collections: first as the Municipal Museum, from 1964 as the District Museum combined with the one in Litvínov, and after the administrative reform of 2003 as the Oblastní muzeum v Mostě, founded by the Ústí Region.
The demolition of Old Most because of brown coal mining forced the collections to be moved twice. Today the museum is housed in the former German Realgymnasium building, completed in 1913, which has belonged to the museum since 1982 and was opened to the public in 1996 after extensive reconstruction. The museum later merged with an art gallery into the present organisation, the Oblastní muzeum a galerie v Mostě.
The collections focus mainly on the region: the Krušné hory (Ore Mountains), the western part of the České středohoří (Central Bohemian Uplands) and the Most Basin. The permanent exhibitions present the nature and geology of north-western Bohemia, medieval art from churches in the Most region, the everyday life of the people of the Ore Mountains and the story of Ulrike von Levetzow, the last love of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The permanent offer also includes the large-format painting Alegorie bohatství by Alphonse Mucha.
