About the museum
The memorial stands in the cottage where the painter Mikoláš Aleš was born on 18 November 1852. The cottage on the slope above the Lomnice stream was built in 1803 by Jan Famfule. In 1907 the cottage burned down, and only in 1937 was it rebuilt on the site to a design by the architect Kouly, thanks to the Mirotice beautification society. It received its present form during a renovation in 1952, when it was converted into a memorial for the hundredth anniversary of Aleš’s birth.
The exhibition presents the life and work of Mikoláš Aleš, painter, draughtsman and illustrator, who belonged to the generation of artists of the National Theatre. The exhibits include photographs and reproductions of his works. Aleš was the third son in his family; he made around 8,000 drawings and sketches, about 65 oil paintings, and illustrated many children’s books. He became famous, among other things, for the Špalíček of national songs and rhymes, first published in 1906.
Since 1990 the cottage has also housed an exhibition on the puppeteer Matěj Kopecký, who spent forty years of his life in Mirotice. It displays old puppets, including Kašpárek, which according to tradition belonged to Kopecký. The cottage has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958.
