About the museum
Beneath the historic centre of Plzeň lies a network of passages and cellars more than 13 kilometres long, which the residents have built since the 13th century. The visitor route is about 800 metres long and runs 5 to 7 metres below the surface.
The guide leads visitors through authentic sections of the underground, hand-built in sandstone, and through parts of the extensive consolidation work carried out in the second half of the 20th century, which was necessary for the structural safety of the historic centre. The route includes about 20 of the original several hundred wells, period wooden suction pipes and finds that illustrate the everyday life of medieval residents. The tour ends in the underground part of the Vodárenská věž (Water Tower), with a faithful replica of an oak waterwheel 7 metres in diameter.
The tours are offered by Prazdroj Visit and start in the same building as the Pivovarské muzeum (Brewery Museum) on Veleslavínova Street; the two tours can be combined. After the tour, adult visitors receive a can of beer.
