Limited operations (expected until 2026-10-31). The indoor exhibition is closed for reconstruction.

About the museum

The open-air museum was established in 2013 close to the former customs house at the Nové Hrady – Pyhrabruck border crossing, and belongs to the Novohradské muzeum (Nové Hrady Museum). The core of the collection consists of exhibits from the former private border open-air museum in Borovany, which was built by Radomil Marek and his friends.

The exhibition follows the development of border protection from the earliest times up to the Czech Republic’s entry into the Schengen area. The larger part is devoted to the Cold War, when the world was divided into two hostile political and military systems. Visitors will see about 150 metres of reconstructed wire barriers, including a signal wall, as well as the equipment and armaments of border guards.

Since 2021, QR codes placed along the border lead to stories from the time of the Iron Curtain. The museum is operated by the Kulturní a informační centrum Nové Hrady (Nové Hrady Cultural and Information Centre).
