About the museum

The museum's foundation is a collection that Ruth Heinemann put together from the 1960s onward: paintings created on or in connection with Fanø since about 1850. She was supported in this by, among others, Prime Minister Viggo Kampmann and the Esbjerg mayor Henning Rasmussen; in 1971 a friends' association was formed, from which today's friends' circle Fanø Kunstmuseums Venner emerged.

Fanø Kunstmuseum opened as an independent museum in 1992 in Sønderho. This was made possible above all by the financial help of the Esbjerg couple Alice and Tage Sørensen, who also supported later purchases of important paintings. The museum moved into a listed house that the manufacturer Niels Møller Kromann had built in 1868 as a merchant's shop and ship chandlery. It is run by an independent institution with a volunteer board.

The collection today comprises more than 1,250 works, all connected to the island through subject or artist. It ranges from genre paintings of folk life from the mid-19th century through Naturalism, Symbolism and Expressionism to abstract and contemporary works. Danish, German and Swedish artists found peace and subjects on the island, reachable only by ferry, in dunes, heath, beach and the special light of the Wadden Sea. Since 2026 a room of its own has been dedicated to the folk-life painter Julius Exner.
