Frederikssund Museum, Færgegården
Local museum in the old ferry farm on Roskilde Fjord near Jægerspris: life by the fjord from the Stone Age to today, with a museum garden.
About the museum
Crossings were made early on over the narrows of Roskilde Fjord at Frederikssund; ferry service is documented in writing since 1516, and archaeological finds point to even older crossings. In 1559 a ferryman moved onto the farm, which, besides transporting people, animals and goods, also ran an inn. In the mid-19th century, up to a hundred wagons had to be ferried across on some days.
The present main building was built in 1839 in place of an older ferry inn. It served as a residence until the early 1980s, and since 1984 the Færgegården has been the cultural history museum of the municipality of Frederikssund. Today it belongs to ROMU, the museum association that also runs the Roskilde Museum and the Lejre Museum.
The permanent exhibition "Menneske og Fjord" uses finds and stories to tell how people lived on Roskilde Fjord from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age and Viking Age to the present – from hunter-gatherer settlements to the fjord as a destination for outings. In the museum garden, a trail and a reconstructed prehistoric settlement lead back to early times; throughout the year, festivals such as Fastelavn, All Saints' and the Christmas market invite families.
