About the museum

Gl. Holtegaard goes back to the architect Lauritz de Thurah, who acquired the property in 1755, had the existing tenant farm demolished and, over the following years, had a country house built with a French-inspired Baroque garden. The garden, with its symmetrically planted fruit trees and rows of linden trees, was reconstructed in 2003 based on old plans.

In 1976 the Søllerød Kommune took over the buildings, restored them and set up rooms for changing art exhibitions in the main building. For decades afterward Gl. Holtegaard was known as an art hall. After financial difficulties, the house closed in 2024; in 2025 it changed owners.

After the takeover, the buildings and garden were extensively restored, and since May 2025 the public could follow the work. In May 2026 Gl. Holtegaard reopened as a newly oriented art hall for modern and contemporary art with a focus on sculpture and painting. In addition to exhibitions, the program includes classical concerts, lectures and events.

A permanent sculpture park is being created in the historic Baroque garden; it is continually expanded and at times integrated into the exhibitions. It includes works by Tal R, Dan Graham, Tomás Saraceno, Per Kirkeby and Ernesto Neto, among others. The art hall is also connected to an artist residency program in Pietrasanta, Italy.
