About the museum

Christian IV had the building on Frederiksholms Kanal constructed at the beginning of the 17th century as a bastion to protect the capital. Just a few years later it was converted into a brewhouse that supplied beer for the fleet's crews. A fire ended brewing in 1767; after that the building served as a warehouse and remained closed to the public for centuries.

In June 2014 the Kongernes Lapidarium opened here. On about 4,000 square meters stand almost 400 stone sculptures and plaster models that once adorned the gardens, squares, and palaces of the kings – including figures from the Nordmandsdalen in the palace park of Fredensborg, sculptures from Amalienborg and Eremitageslottet, and works by Johannes Wiedewelt and Jacques Saly. Among the special features is the original equestrian statue of Christian V made of lead.

Today the brewhouse belongs to the Krigsmuseet of the Nationalmuseet. Between cobblestones and mighty wooden beams, the tour "I majestætens tjeneste" tells how Danish kings used sculptures to present themselves to their subjects as sublime rulers – for example, armored like Roman emperors. The building can also be rented for events.
