Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed. The museum in the Livgardens Kaserne has been closed since January 1, 2025, because of the renovation of the barracks; no date for reopening is known. An exhibition of the collection ("Garden på Garderhøj") can be seen at Garderhøjfortet in Gentofte (opening hours and admission of the fort).

About the museum

Livgardens Historiske Samling was opened on January 12, 1978, by Queen Margrethe II. It documents the history of the Den Kongelige Livgarde, which was raised in 1658, as a guard unit of the royal house and as a field unit of the Danish army.

The collection is housed in the Livgardens Kaserne on Gothersgade next to Rosenborg Castle. The core of the building goes back to a pleasure pavilion of Christian V from 1670, which later became part of the Rosenborg orangery; in 1785 it was converted into barracks, and in 1786 the Life Guards moved in. In addition to the museum, the collection includes an archive, a library, and a storage facility. On display are uniforms, weapons, pictures, models, and musical scores; many pieces belong to a foundation of the guard's officer corps. Since 2018, a friends' association has supported the work.

Since January 1, 2025, the museum has been closed to visitors because of the renovation of the barracks. In March 2026, together with the Garderhøjfonden, the collection opened the exhibition "Garden på Garderhøj" at Garderhøjfortet in Gentofte. It recalls the guard's connection to Gentofte – for example the Jægersborg Kaserne, which the regiment used from 1909 to 1943, and the deployment of the guardsmen to secure the capital in the First World War.
