Tåsinge Museum
Volunteer-run island museum in Bregninge on Tåsinge with a captain's house, rope-making workshop, musical instruments and the story of Elvira Madigan.
About the museum
It began with master painter Povl Fredholm, who from 1957 had two older buildings dismantled on the island and rebuilt on his property in the Bregninge Bakker, opposite the church of Bregninge: the rear building of the dissolved Frederik Juel School in Eskær and a skipper's house from Vemmenæs. In 1958 he opened his private collection of farming and maritime objects from Tåsinge there as a Skipperhjem and Folkemindesamling (skipper's home and folklore collection).
In 1967 Fredholm donated his museum to the island's population. The specially founded Taasinge Museumslaug took over operations on January 1, 1968, and has since run the museum as an independent institution with volunteers, as well as the island's local archive in the village of Landet.
In the following decades the complex grew: in 1971/72 the rope-making workshop from Troense, whose ropewalk had supplied the shipyards of the skippers' town with rope, was moved to Bregninge. Volunteers built the two-story house for the folk-life collection in 1976 and 1993. A bequest from the USA finally made possible a separate music house, where since 2013 the instrument and sheet music collection of the teacher and fiddler Bent Nielsen has been displayed.
Today the museum comprises five exhibition buildings and about 18,000 square meters of the protected Bregninge Bakker with views over the South Funen Archipelago. A focus in the front building is the drama of the tightrope walker Elvira Madigan and the Swedish lieutenant Sixten Sparre, who died in 1889 in the forest Nørreskoven on Tåsinge.
