About the museum

At the end of the 19th century, Paul Gauguin settled in Le Pouldu, far from the crowds of Pont-Aven. He lodged at the Buvette de la Plage, an inn run by Marie Henry, together with Paul Sérusier, Meijer de Haan and Charles Filiger. The painters decorated the walls of the dining room and developed Synthetism there.

From 1989 the commune of Clohars-Carnoët paid tribute to these artists and rebuilt the Buvette. The “chemin des peintres” path was opened in 2003 with panels showing the paintings at their places of inspiration, and the Buvette was renovated in 2013.

The new establishment, opened in 2025 and run by the town, covers about 1,300 m². Seven rooms combine sets, films and reproductions: a train carriage, the arrival at Quimperlé, an artist’s studio, the reconstructed Buvette, a collection of reproductions of the best-known works, a hotel room evoking the growth of the seaside resort, and a closing film on contemporary creation in the area. The collection on display consists of reproductions.
