About the museum

The Faymoreau coalfield was mined from 1827. For about 130 years, miners worked there extracting coal until the pits closed in 1958. The mining centre tells both the industrial history of this activity and the everyday life of the residents of the mining village, with its corons, its chapel and its stained-glass windows.

The museum has held the “Musée de France” label since 2003 and is part of the network of the Conservation des musées de Vendée. After twenty-one months of closure for an extension and renovation carried out from 2016 to 2018, it reopened on June 30, 2018, with new exhibition rooms, a shop and a larger reception area. The site is run by the Communauté de communes Vendée Sèvre Autise.

The route has seven stages: the history of coal in Vendée and the Deux-Sèvres, the miner's path from the changing room to the mine, the pithead with the reconstructed mine, the uses of coal, working conditions, life in the miners' housing and geology. The hanging room (salle des pendus), where miners hung up their clothes, the reconstructed mine and the pithead are among the highlights of the visit. The centre received the Destination d'excellence label in 2025.
