About the museum

The Saint-Piat chapel stands outside the east end of the Notre-Dame cathedral of Chartres, to which a glass staircase connects it. In 1323 the chapter decided to build a new chapter house, completed in 1335. The upper chapel was begun around 1324 under Bishop Aimeri de Châtelus, was nearly finished by around 1349 and was consecrated in 1358. It honours Saint Piat, whose relics had been solemnly recognised in 1310.

Closed to the public in 2000, the chapel underwent a long period of research and restoration before reopening on September 21, 2024. Its stained-glass windows largely date from around 1350. In 2022 the Korean artist Bang Hai Ja made new windows for the chapter house.

The cathedral's treasure is displayed here on two levels: about 150 liturgical objects and precious works, including the Saint-Aignan tabernacle (c. 1225–1230), a crozier of Henri de Grez, suits of armour donated as ex-votos in the 15th century, and 17th-century Huron and Abenaki wampum belts. On the first floor, the former chapter house also presents 13th-century reliefs from the rood screen destroyed in 1763. The monument is managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux.
