About the museum

The site was occupied as early as Roman times, and the castle reuses a late Roman rampart. A stone count’s residence was built here in the 11th century. After Touraine was joined to the royal domain in 1204, the castle was enlarged in the 13th century into a quadrangular fortress with round corner towers, then remodelled in the 15th century, when the Tour de Guise received machicolations and the Governors’ residence was built.

In 1545 it became the residence of the governor of Tours. In 1591 Charles de Guise escaped from the tower that now bears his name. In the 18th century the castle served as a poorhouse and a quarry. The City of Tours bought it in 1815 to use as a barracks, the Caserne Meusnier, until the site was handed back in 1968.

The towers were listed as historic monuments in 1913 and the rest of the site in 1973. Restoration began in 1972, followed by archaeological excavations from 1974 to 1978. The castle has since hosted cultural and heritage activities, with exhibitions every year since 2001.

Today this historic site is open to contemporary art: the castle’s exhibition centre presents a programme of photography, painting, sculpture and visual arts, in partnership with the City of Tours museums and the Jeu de Paume.
