About the museum
The Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne came from an idea that emerged in 2010 among winegrowers: a cultural and tourist venue dedicated to Burgundy’s winegrowing heritage. The inscription of the Climats de Bourgogne on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 gave the project decisive momentum. The Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne created the association that now runs a network of three sites, in Chablis, Beaune and Mâcon, which first opened in spring 2023.
In Mâcon, the Cité has been set up in the former premises of the Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne, enlarged and completely transformed, in the cultural district not far from the historic centre. The architects RBC Architecture and ACL Associés designed an extension with curved forms inspired by the ammonite, a fossil very common in the clay-limestone soils of the region.
A totem shaped like the screw of a wooden press towers over the building and is visible from the avenue, the Saône and the Voie Bleue; it offers a view of the river and part of the town. The visit presents the wine region of the Mâconnais, the Côte chalonnaise and the Côtes du Couchois.
