About the museum
The idea of an ecomuseum on the Véron peninsula came from Pierre Acier, a local history enthusiast who had assembled a large collection on the region’s heritage. The elected officials of the Véron rural district took up the idea and, in the 2000s, bought a group of buildings in Savigny-en-Véron. The museum received the “Musée de France” label in 2001 thanks to the donation of about three thousand objects from rural life, and it officially opened its doors in June 2003.
The site consists of two neighboring farms from the early 19th century, built of tuffeau stone, with flood protection features such as a buttress wall, a refuge room and raised floors. Around the buildings, hedged meadows classified as Natura 2000 are home to heritage breeds of horses, donkeys, cows, sheep and goats that help maintain the landscape.
Works completed in 2014 renewed the reception area, the shop, the educational room and the storerooms. The collection has grown with ethnographic and archaeological holdings, and the museum now covers the whole territory of the Chinon Vienne et Loire community of municipalities. It has hosted artists in residence since it opened and presents an exhibition each year that brings past and present into dialogue.
