About the museum
The Lascaux cave was discovered on September 12, 1940 by four teenagers in Montignac. Listed as a historic monument the same year, it soon received its first visitors, but the intense number of visitors damaged the paintings: it was closed to the public in 1963 on the decision of minister André Malraux.
To allow the paintings to be seen again, Lascaux II, a partial replica near the original cave, opened in 1983. Lascaux IV, the International Center of Cave Art, followed in 2016. Designed by Snøhetta and Casson Mann, it reproduces the entire cave using digital 3D surveys and the expertise of the Atelier des Fac-Similés du Périgord.
The visit begins with the cave, either self-guided or guided, and then continues through several display spaces: the Atelier, the Theater of Cave Art, the Cinema, the Gallery of the Imaginary and the Immersion room.
