About the museum

The Maison de Fer is a holiday villa built in 1896 for Georges de Coninck and his wife. Its structure, walls and roof are made entirely of metal, using a process of pressed sheet metal patented by the Belgian engineer Joseph Danly.

The villa was lived in until the 1980s, after which the state acquired it through expropriation. Listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1975, it was left to decay and was badly damaged by the storm of 1999.

The town of Poissy acquired the remains in 2016 and launched a reconstruction project. The house was dismantled to preserve as many original elements as possible, then re-erected in the Parc Meissonier under the direction of the architect Philippe Blanc, funded through sponsorship and grants. The work was completed in 2019, and the house was inaugurated during the European Heritage Days in 2020.

Today the house serves as a heritage information centre. The art and history gallery, presented in a new scenography since 2026, displays around fifty works from the collections of the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Poissy. Temporary exhibitions are also held here.
